Heart disease—common and frightening
Cardiovascular disease is currently the number one cause of death for adults in our country.
As scary as that first sentence is, no one should feel helpless when it comes to the overall health of his or her heart. From eating a healthy diet and quitting smoking to exercising regularly and trying to reduce stress as much as possible, we can all take a pro-active approach to our cardiovascular health and do whatever we can to keep it at bay for as long as possible.
Along with eating a diet rich in vegetables and whole grains, many nutritional remedies have been found to help our hearts stay healthy and strong. When it comes to your heart, magnesium is extremely important. In addition to helping coordinate the nerves that help keep the heart beating, magnesium also helps regulate the actual heart muscle.
Studies back up magnesium’s role in heart health. For example, one study of 200 patients found that taking a combination of magnesium and potassium for just three weeks led to a drop in arrhythmias. Magnesium has also been favorably linked to a decrease in angina, and a reduction in blood pressure.
The mineral potassium also appears to play a major role in heart health. Like magnesium, it has been found to have a favorable effect on blood pressure. One study of over 80 subjects with hypertension found that eating three to six servings of potassium-rich foods every day caused about 80 percent of the patients to drastically reduce the amount of high blood pressure medications they were taking. Like magnesium, potassium also works by regulating the heartbeat and preventing arrhythmias.
Known as an amino acid derivative, taurine helps to keep both magnesium and potassium inside our cells. As a bonus, taurine has also been shown to help keep sodium out of the cells. By doing this, it acts as a natural diuretic, which in turn may lead to lower blood pressure readings.
Taken individually, each of these nutrients may have a positive effect on your health, and specifically your heart. But when taken in combination, their impact may be especially impressive. Life is too short to be worried about becoming part of a grim statistic—we should all be doing what we can to keep our hearts as healthy as possible. Taking this impressive trio of nutrients seems like a reasonable and prudent place to start!
